Why most Wellbeing Programs fail to Deliver

Most workplace wellbeing programmes don’t fail because the content is wrong. They fail because they treat symptoms.

I learned this the hard way. I have designed and run multiple programs to train resilience, emotional intelligence and personal development.

The tools helped. But the deepest lesson was uncomfortable: the root cause of most people’s struggles was not a lack of techniques. It was the way they were living and working. Sedentary, screen-bound, chronically stressed, disconnected from nature, community and purpose — stone-age minds and bodies in an environment they were never designed for.

That insight now shapes everything I offer. Real change doesn’t come from another webinar or another app. It comes from changing daily habits and the environments that drive them.

IN THE ZONE — The mental fitness programme

Three years ago I tried something new with a major Canadian client. I designed and delivered a mental fitness programme called In the Zone  for more than 700 employees  — twelve weeks covering resilience, mindfulness, growth mindset, sleep, diet, exercise and self-care. A 12-week, habit-based programme that helps employees reach and sustain their optimal physical, mental and emotional state.

In the Zone treats mental health the way athletes treat fitness: something you build, daily, on physical foundations. Not a lecture series — a structured programme of small, consistent daily actions that compound into significant, measurable change.

What it covers. The programme integrates the foundations of wellbeing — sleep, diet, movement and recovery — with the psychological skills that determine how people meet pressure: resilience, mindfulness, growth mindset, behavioural flexibility, emotional regulation and energy management. Each week, participants run small practical experiments, observe what changes and build on what works.

Why it’s different. Most programmes deliver information; In the Zone builds habits. It was redesigned around a simple finding from its first large deployment: people don’t change because they know more — they change when small daily actions are easy, social and repeated. And it is honest about causes: it helps people redesign how they work and live, not just cope better with an unliveable routine.

Track record. Delivered to more than 700 employees at a major Canadian business. [Add 2–3 headline outcomes here: completion rate, wellbeing score movement, participant quotes — real numbers only.]

Delivery. Cohort-based, typically 8–12 weeks. Formats range from fully virtual to blended with live workshops. Includes manager briefings, weekly practices, and [measurement approach — e.g. pre/post wellbeing assessment].

KEYNOTES & TALKS

I speak to organisations, conferences and leadership events about mental health, resilience and how to live and work well in a demanding age. My talks combine thirty-five years of psychology with evidence, stories and practical shifts people can make the same day. The aim is not to inform an audience but to move one.

Signature topics:

The Mental Fitness Revolution. Why wellbeing programmes underperform, what 700 employees taught me about the real causes of workplace mental health problems, and what actually works: habits, environment and the foundations of physical health.

Stone-Age Minds in a Screen-Age World. The evolutionary mismatch behind modern stress, distraction and burnout — and how individuals and organisations can redesign work to fit human beings, rather than the other way round.

Resilience for an Uncertain Age. How people and teams stay grounded, adaptable and purposeful through disruption — psychological flexibility, connection and meaning as the infrastructure of performance.

Formats: 30–60 minute keynote, half-day workshop, or leadership team session. Delivered in person (UK and Europe, travelling by train wherever possible) or virtually worldwide.
